Translating the LCM user interface |
LCM is currently available in Bulgarian, English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese of Brazil, Russian and Spanish. We welcome and support (technically) translation efforts. This page includes more detailed information on how to create or contribute to a translation.
LCM is developed using English as the reference language, altough this does not restrain the translators from using another language as their reference language.
The initial translation of LCM can take about one week, using 1-2 hours per day. LCM includes aproximately 900 strings.
After the initial translation, some strings in the reference language can be occasionally added or removed. In average, this affects about 10-20 strings per month (1-2% of the total number of strings).
Translators can test the results of their translation either by installing LCM locally on their computer, or by using the publicly accessible testing site. On request, we can provide administrator access so that translators can also test the administrative area.
If you wish to modify an existing translation, please consider first contacting maintainer of that translation. The maintainer’s e-mail should be in the field 0_maintainer of the translation.
Translations are integrated into the next LCM release if they are complete (or nearly complete).

LCM is using the Trad-Lang [1] web interface. When a string is updated in the translation interface, it is immediately updated on the LCM public testing site.
This alternative requires absolutely no technical knowledge, but it is recommended to have a good (fast/stable) Internet connection.
To use the translation interface:
Create a personal user account for the LCM website. From the login page to the private area, click on the “register” link. It requires a valid e-mail address and it will provide you access to the translation system (note: the public testing site uses seperate user accounts).
When you have received your password by e-mail, go to the translation system and login.
Select the module “LCM interface”. A list of source and destination languages will then be shown for this module. If your language is not available for the destination language, you can create a new translation by entering its language code.
For example, Bulgarian is “bg”, German is “de”, French is “fr” and Arab is “ar”, but Portuguese of Brazil is “pt_br”. In case of doubt, contact the developers mailing-list.
When translating strings, remove the "<NEW>" or "<MODIF>" tag in the string.
If the string has a "<NEW>" and the string was modified in the source language, it will overwrite the string in the destination language. If you are unsure of your translation, you can add "<MODIF>" to remember to check the string. The translation system recognises these strings and allows you to filter the list of strings using those criteria.
Note: Translations are manually reviewed before they are entered into the project CVS (development system).
Here are a few screenshots of what the interface looks like:
<NEW> or <MODIF> marker in them to show that they should be reviewed. When the strings is reviewed or translated, do not forget to remove the marker from the string!This is the most convenient for translators who do not have a permanent Internet access, but it requires a bit more technical knowledge than the on-line alternative (described in the next section).
This method can also be more convenient for the initial translation, and to later update/correct the translation from the on-line alternative.
We encourage translators to keep their translation up-to-date using the web interface (described above). For example, it provides an easy way to update strings which were modified in the reference language (marked as “MODIF“).
