LCM and a few other software solution for legal case management have been the topic of an article by Shaun Drummond in the Lawyers Weekly newspaper in Australia: "Controlling your practices", June 18, 2007).

LCM developer, Mathieu Lutfy, says they originally built the software for non-profit legal NGOs. “A few legal advice organisations in Bulgaria were using various ad hoc methods to collect the information about their activities. They had different methodologies and it was causing problems with collaboration between advice centres,” he explains. “Also, it was difficult to generate accurate statistics on their activities, which in return made it more difficult to get funding.”

But he says the user base of the software has widened to various community groups and small law firms, and in addition to users in various European countries, they have received requests for support from the US, Australia, India, Tanzania, Brazil, Chile and Vietnam.

As a result, Lutfy says they are thinking of changing the statement on their website that the LCM is aimed at “not-for-profit” users, but stresses that this reminds users that the “billing functions of the software are rather limited at the moment”.

Malcolm and Lutfy both stress the strength of either using open source or developing software that you provide as open source means you will have access to the support of many developers worldwide to improve the product.
